Art! (not mine)
Sep. 5th, 2006 11:44 amJust got an email message this morning from one of my favorite artists, Grant Fuhst, letting me know that his website is finally up at http://www.grantfuhst.com/. I first saw Grant's work in the art show at Baycon 3 years ago, and
_darkvictory and I were both captivated. Since then we've bought a couple of his original canvases as well as 4 or 5 prints and I've had a bit of an ongoing email dialogue with him. He's been pretty much absent from the world of con art shows for the past 18 months or so, as he's been working on pieces for a couple of gallery shows. I'm glad to see that he seems to be getting more pieces out there and (presumably) selling more.
Yes, his work is pretty dark and often disturbing (one fan once said to me, "That's an amazing piece. I just couldn't have in in my house."). That's one of the reasons I like it. One of these days, somebody will have to explain to me just why fan artists seem to, with few exceptions, work mostly on the fantasy side (and the sunny side of that), and feel that they have to be so darn cute. As someone leading a docent tour of the art show at the 2003 Westercon in Seattle put it, "People who like pictures of winged kittens really like liking pictures of winged kittens." Me, I don't get it. If I were a better artist, I'd do a series of angelic, big-eyed, sweetly smiling children doing really disturbing and horrible things.
However, it was heartening to see that my local drugstore was carrying Nene Thomas' 2007 calendar. While I'm not much of one for fairies and elves, I'm always glad to see someone whose art I've seen at con art shows getting some commercial traction.
