Hollywood eats its young, again

I'm in the habit of browsing the new trailers at http://www.apple.com/trailers on a regular basis, just to see if there's anything interesting coming out. Imagine my surprise on discovering, when I went to take a look today, that there are upcoming remakes of both The Poseidon Adventure and The Hills Have Eyes.

Why, dear God, why? It's not as if either film was a deathless classic, or had subtext that wasn't sufficiently mined in the original. For my money, the Mad magazine parody, The Poop-side-down Adventure was far more sophisticated and literate than the original film, and while Hills may just be Wes Craven's best (and most underrated) film, it's not like it was crying out to be re-envisioned.

Is Hollywood indeed so bereft of imagination and daring that this is what it's coming to? How soon before we get remakes of The Towering Inferno or Don't Go In The Basement? Have all the stories indeed been told and we're dining on the scraps? Or are the studios so bloated and stuporous that this IS the best they can do?

Now where's that collection of Brazilian horror movies...
