Jan. 30th, 2008 12:27 pmI don’t often do politics here, but I’m more than a little concerned by what’s happened to the entire campaign and nomination process recently. With Edwards and Giuliani both dropping out of the campaign as of today, Romney sinking, and Huckabee not able to build the support he expected in the South (at least judging by South Carolina results), we’re left with a presumptive nominee on the Republican side and the Clinton vs. Obama Celebrity Deathmatch on the Democratic side. With six months to go before the conventions, this effectively means that any substantive discussion of alternate visions and viewpoints is pretty much thrown to the wayside, and most of the country will just get to rubberstamp the status quo.
I think we can firmly place the blame for the lack of dialogue on the fact that the campaigns start so early, and cost so much, that those with ideas that might be of value, but no massive funding, sink so early in the process. Well, that and the fact that most media seems only interested (or perhaps only capable) of covering the horse-race aspects of the campaign.
And on the far turn, it’s Clinton hugging the rail with Obama coming up on the left. Edwards has lost pace, while Gravel is still at the starting gate flogging a dead horse…
