RIP Teo Macero
Feb. 22nd, 2008 11:27 amAt 83, he certainly had a long and productive life. He produced some of the most influential jazz albums extant, from Brubeck’s Time Out to Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew, revolutionizing the way that jazz was recorded along the way. He was responsible for Mingus and Monk getting signed to Columbia, helped Mingus found the Jazz Composer’s Workshop, and was one of the earliest jazz composers to write in so-called “third stream” forms, combining jazz and classical elements. A brilliant composer, arranger, and orchestrator, not much known outside jazz circles, his influence will be felt for many decades to come. in addition to all this, he’s probably the coolest person ever to come from Glens Falls, NY. I think we all need to groove to some of his work in memoriam (cueing up In a Silent Way).
