Talk like a pirate? I already do...
Sep. 19th, 2008 07:38 amSince I'm firmly of the opinion that historical pirates talked like everybody else (save a few technical terms, the same way musicians or plumbers develop a specialized vocabulary for those things distinct to their trade), and I'm sure there were the same variations in speech depending on background and education (or lack thereof) as we see in modern speech. Much of what people do when they try and 'talk like a pirate' seems to be based on the 1930's film version of Treasure Island. Now, when they institute "International Talk Like Wallace Beery Day", I'll be glad to be there 'Yarr"-ing with the rest of them, but until then, my piratical speech will consist of my everyday speech, although the temptation to toss in an occasional reference to spars, scuppers, and belaying a line is certainly there.
