If y'all haven't installed the newest version of iTunes yet, I've gotta say that I'm impressed by the Genius feature. It's similar to Pandora in some ways, giving recommendations of music that you might like based on what's in your library and the current tune selected. Of course, it's only offers music that's in the iTunes store and some of the more, uh, obscure artists in my library cause it to give the computer equivalent of a blank stare ("We have no idea what that weird shit is that you're listening to, but here's the current top 20. Choose one of them for God's sake, so we can fit you in a convenient pigeonhole, you bastard.").

What's extra cool, though, is the Genius playlist function – pick a tune, click on the Genius button, and it generates a play list from what's in your library based around the selected tune. So far, it's doing a pretty good job of picking songs pretty close to what I'd pick if I just assembling a musically consistent play list (as long as I stay away from the weird stuff, that is). Picking "Cissy Strut" by The Meters, for example, generated a play list including Tower of Power, Billy Preston, Al Green, Aretha Franklin, The Isley Brothers, James Brown, Bill Withers, and Booker T and the MGs, just to mention a few. This would be great for party playlists and the like.

And, [livejournal.com profile] asimovberlioz, it has seemed to do a pretty good job of suggestions from what classical selections are avaiable through the iTunes Store (though I know you prefer lossless quality rips rather than 128 or 256k AAC). I'd be interested in your take on its choices as you have a much larger collection of symphonic music than my meager selection.
